Michael Watching the Solar Eclipse

Michael watching the 2017 total solar eclipse in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.

Obviously it hasn't happened yet as the sun is strong on the face and those eclipse glasses.

The t-shirt is my rendition of what I think the total eclipse and solar flares looked like to those lucky enough to be observers.

Your Commissioned Portrait Painting - Fine Art vs. Digital Art -

What kind or portrait you decide to commission depends on your personal requirements and definition of art. Portrait painting is a creative process and the possibilities are as limitless as people and painters. You can capture your loved one many times with many different art forms.

Beautiful art can be both traditional and digital. It can be photo realistic or interpretive. Both of these art forms rely on the principles of color theory, perspective, composition and light.

There are several differences between fine art and digital art.  Visually the difference is dimension and texture. Putting 3D printing aside, graphic arts software that would be comparable to traditional painting is two dimensional. Digital art can imitate the texture of paint on canvas, but it cannot replicate the three dimensional quality of paint. Another difference is that digital art will yield as many copies as you want. A painted portrait is a point in time and one-of-a-kind.  A final difference is that an artist spends many more hours creating a painting using traditional methods. With digital art there is no set up, no waste and no mistakes that can't be changed.

Commission a portrait painting and it will have pride of place in your home for years to come.

Famous Portraits

There are many examples of well-known portraits of famous artists.Self portraits are an assignment in every art class because the artist is always available as a model. With the advent of mirrors in the 15th century artists painted themselves to promote their careers as portrait painters. Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Frida Kahlo were prolific painters of their own image. Magritte painted himself hiding his face with an apple.

Artists have painted their wives, daughters and famous people, The Woman with Green Stripe, Girl with a Pearl Earring, and Marilyn Monroe paintings are iconic examples.  Artists have made ordinary people famous, consider the Mona Lisa and American Gothic. The history of portraits has evolved from the stone heads of ancient pharaohs to fine art photography. There are museums dedicated to portraits throughout the world including the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Most important, the  portrait is an enduring art form that anyone can commission and own.

Child Portrait Painting: Sophie - 3yrs

Portrait Painting Children
Sophia
This painting of a child was just accepted into the juried student show at College of Marin for 2017!

I think the judges liked the spontaneity of the brush strokes that you get when working with acrylic paint.  I am glad I didn't try and re-work the painting too much.  Anyone who knows Sophia will recognize her here.

This acrylic painting is 16" x 20".
